Turning Dreams into Action: A Roadmap for Group Practice Owners

If you're like me—and like most entrepreneurs I’ve worked with—you have a lot of dreams. You started your group practice with a vision of a better future, both for yourself and for the community you serve. But turning that vision into reality requires a clear and actionable plan.

The key to making your dreams come true is to define what you want your future to look like and create a roadmap to get there. Let’s walk through the process together.

Mapping Your Future: A Goal-Setting Strategy

One of my favorite business books, Traction by Gino Wickman, emphasizes setting 10-, 3-, and 1-year goals. However, many group practice owners find a 10-year timeline too overwhelming. Instead, I recommend starting with a 5-year vision and working backward to create a structured, achievable plan.

Set Your 5-Year Goals

Begin by imagining where you want to be in five years. Ask yourself:

  • What will your home life look like?

  • What do you want your clinical schedule to be like?

  • How much income do you want to take home?

  • What does that mean for your practice? How many sessions need to be booked at your current rate to reach that income level?

  • What impact do you want your group practice to have on your community?

Set Your 3-Year Goals

Now, take those five-year goals and break them down further. What needs to be in place in three years to ensure you're on track to achieve your five-year vision? Consider:

  • Business growth milestones

  • Team expansion needs

  • Service offerings and community impact

Set Your 1-Year Goals

With your three-year plan in mind, identify the key changes you need to make in the next 12 months. Think about:

  • Adjustments in your marketing strategy

  • The best areas to focus your energy

  • The people you need to bring on board to support your growth

  • Financial adjustments—where should you reduce or increase expenses?

From Tension to Excitement

Reflecting on these timelines, how do you feel? When I went through this process recently, I shifted from uncertainty to excitement. Instead of wondering if my dreams were possible, I was able to clearly define my goals and create a measurable, actionable plan.

Your dreams are within reach. With a structured approach, you can transform your vision into reality. Start today—your future self will thank you!
